Yoga Accessories - What You Really Need
Start with your body than accessorize...If you were stuck on a deserted island, all you would really need to do yoga would be your body and maybe some soft, but firm sand to lie on. For unlike some other sports, you don't need a lot of yoga accessories when you practice. In yoga, your body is really the most important "equipment" that you need. Of course, there are some basic items which can help you be more comfortable and safer in your practice.Standard Yoga Accessories Clothing - The clothing you wear while doing Yoga should be comfortable and breathable. It must allow you to move freely. If your clothes are too restrictive they will get in the way of your movements. In the other direction, oversized, loose clothes can bunch up or cause a distraction. For example, too large of fitting tee shirts, can fall towards your face during some inversion poses. And this may cause you to pay more attention to whether or not anything is showing, than to the actual asana you are performing.
If you are taking a yoga class, your instructor might want you to wear something that is more form fitting. Such garments allow for easy checking of your alignment. Shorts are often a good choice, weather permitting, Chorts are comfortable and cool - a useful trait because you can get very warm from doing the asanas. And in some types of yoga, such as Bikram, shorts maybe a necessity because of the level of heat in the room. Traditionally, yoga is practiced barefoot, but some people wear cotton socks or soft yoga shoes. Mats - Yoga mats, used during practice, offer some padding when you are lying or sitting directly on a hard floor. They also provide some level of sanitation, especially in a classroom environment, since a number of postures require you to put your head on the floor.
Another valuable quality using mats can add is to provide you traction during your poses. As your body heats up, you starting sweat, you maybe more likely to slip, if you were directly on a floor. The mat helps minimize potential slipping, adding to the safety of your practice. There are a variety of different mats you can use. So if one size and thickness does not work for you, another should. Optional Yoga Accessories Yoga Mat Bag - A bag to carry your yoga mat to and from class is a good idea. Some yoga mat bags also have room for other items such as a change of clothes, your keys, and wallet. Yoga DVDs - Yoga can be done at home on your schedule and DVD or Blu-rays are great instructional tools. These can be especially handy, if you are not taking classes. Many yoga DVDs have been made by top teachers. Yoga Props - There are a many props that can help you with your form, especially if you are a beginner. Fo more about specific props, please visit, Yoga Props. One more accessory should be mentioned. It is one I think is most important, a water bottle. During your practice, your body will likely sweat and release toxins. Drinking water is a great way to flush out the toxins and replenish any lost fluids. After your practice you will probably be thirsty. Cool, refreshing water is a wonderful reward after all your hard work. When you first start practicing Yoga, you may want to just buy the standard items. But as you advance, add other yoga accessories to help you develop and grow.
